Turning Investment Jargon into Alphabet Soup

This course includes videos, required and supplemental reading materials, quizzes and exams. See the PDF for complete details and available CPE credits.

Workshop Summary: This course will help financial officers distinguish among the varieties of structured products available in the bond market. In particular, we will focus on Collateralized Debt Obligations, Collateralized Loan Obligations, and Collateralized Mortgage Obligations. We will begin our discussion by reviewing the fundamentals of securitization, then address the development and uses of these ‘structured products’. Throughout the workshop we will examine trends in issuance and outstanding volume before and after the financial crisis of 2008-2009, and see if we can draw any conclusions from this comparison.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

  1. Define securitization
  2. Recognize the benefits and drivers of demand for securitized investment products
  3. Distinguish between the structure and cash flow characteristics of mortgage pass-thru securities, CDOs, CMOs, and CLOs
  4. Compare and contrast the CDO market today with the market environment leading up to the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009
